The Bonfires of San Juan
Work: The Bonfires of San Juan
In several places in the northern hemisphere, mainly in Europe, peasant communities of pantheistic, polytheistic or animistic beliefs waited for the nights of June 23 and 24 to light bonfires during the summer solstice, giving the sun the energy it would need to end the winter.
After the expansion of the Catholic Church throughout Europe and then Latin America, this holiday was renamed the Feast of Saint John, celebrating the birth of Saint John the Baptist.
