Artemisia
WORK: Artemisia. Illustration in homage to the work of the Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi and her work “Judith beheading Holofernes”
Her story is not only that of one of the few women who dedicated herself to the arts when these and creativity were reserved for men, but also that of a survivor. Artemisia Gentileschi is one of the masters of the Baroque, following in the footsteps of Caravaggio in the use of chiaroscuro, creating paintings that portray historical women, queens and martyrs, full of expressiveness. The artist, the first woman to belong to the Florence Academy of Drawing, was raped at 18, and had to endure a public and humiliating trial, only to later succeed.
Gentileschi, offended, decided to continue painting her strong and independent women from the Old Testament, but this time she portrayed her revenge fantasies with all the violence she could. In “Judith Beheading Holofernes” she shows the revenge of the biblical heroine, who kills an invading general who is in love with her.
